Tuti was an old golden dog.
His muzzle had turned almost white with age, and the once-shiny golden fur on his body was now covered with dirt and dust from years of wandering.
Small scars marked his legs and shoulders.
Some were old.
Some were new.
At fifteen years old, every step had become slower.
Every morning took a little more effort than the one before.
Yet Tuti never complained.
He simply woke up each day and searched for another reason to keep going.
Today was different.
Today was his fifteenth birthday.
No one knew.
No one remembered.
The city carried on as if it were any ordinary day.
Tuti slowly wandered through familiar streets, sniffing around restaurants and markets in search of leftover food.
His old stomach growled with hunger.
Sometimes kind people dropped a piece of bread.
Most days they didn’t.
As afternoon turned into evening, Tuti passed a beautiful house with a large glass wall facing the street.
Something inside made him stop.
A young golden dog was celebrating a birthday.
Colorful balloons floated across the living room.
A beautiful cake sat on the table.
Children laughed as they gently placed a birthday hat on the happy dog.
Everyone clapped while singing together.
The little dog barked excitedly, surrounded by people who loved him.
Tuti quietly sat outside the glass.
He didn’t scratch the window.
He didn’t bark.
He simply watched.
His tired eyes reflected the warm lights inside the house.
For a moment, memories came rushing back.
Long ago…
Before he became a stray…
Someone had once hugged him.
Someone had once whispered his name.
He couldn’t remember their faces anymore.
Only the feeling of being loved.
The birthday song ended.
The lights inside remained warm and bright.
Tuti slowly stood up.
Without making a sound, he turned away and continued walking.
Those smiles belonged to someone else.
As night fell, he searched through a pile of trash behind a nearby bakery.
Empty boxes.
Paper cups.
Plastic wrapping.
Nothing worth eating.
Then he noticed something colorful beneath a torn paper bag.
It was a small birthday hat.
Bent.
Dusty.
Its ribbon was torn.
Someone had thrown it away after a celebration.
Tuti gently picked it up with his mouth.
To everyone else…
It was garbage.
To him…
It felt like the only birthday gift he would receive this year.
He carried the little hat through the quiet streets.
His old legs ached.
More than once he had to stop and rest.

But he never let the tiny hat fall.
Finally, he reached the narrow alley he called home.
There was no kennel.
No blanket.
Only a worn piece of cardboard lying beside a cracked brick wall.
Tuti carefully placed the birthday hat beside it.
Then, using his nose, he slowly nudged it onto his head.
It slipped sideways over one ear.
The old dog didn’t mind.
He quietly lay down on the cardboard.
Above him, the night sky stretched endlessly.
Cars passed in the distance.
People celebrated with their families.
The city was full of laughter.
But in that quiet little alley, an old dog spent his fifteenth birthday completely alone.
No birthday cake.
No candles.
No presents.
No one to whisper,
“Happy Birthday, Tuti.”
A cold breeze drifted through the alley.
Tuti curled himself into a small ball to keep warm.
The little birthday hat remained on his head.
He closed his tired eyes.
Just before falling asleep, his tail gave one slow, gentle wag.
Not because he expected a miracle.
But because somewhere deep inside, after fifteen long years, he still believed that tomorrow might bring someone who would stop…
Smile…
Call him by his name…
And remind him that even an old dog deserves to be loved.
