The old dog had no name.
No one had ever called him home.
For as long as anyone could remember, he wandered the streets alone.
His fur, once black and shiny, had become patchy from mange.
Scars covered his frail body.
His ears drooped with age, and every step seemed slower than the last.
He didn’t know exactly how old he was.
But somehow, deep inside his heart, today felt different.
If anyone had known his story, they would have realized that today was his birthday.
No family remembered.
No one prepared a cake.
No one whispered, “Happy Birthday.”
The old dog simply woke up in the narrow alley where he slept every night, stretched his aching body, and began another lonely walk.
He wandered through busy streets searching for scraps of food.
Outside cafés, people laughed together.
Children carried colorful presents.
The smell of fresh bread drifted through the air.
His empty stomach growled softly.
As the afternoon faded, he stopped in front of a beautiful cake shop.
Behind the crystal-clear glass were dozens of birthday cakes.
Some were covered in strawberries.
Some had bright candles waiting to be lit.
Families smiled as they chose cakes for the people they loved.
The old dog quietly sat outside the window.
He rested his tired head against the cool glass.
His cloudy eyes reflected the warm lights inside.
He didn’t bark.
He didn’t beg.
He simply watched.
For a brief moment, he imagined what it might feel like if just once in his life someone celebrated his birthday.
Then he slowly stood up and walked away.
Those cakes belonged to someone else.
Not to an old stray dog that nobody even knew existed.
As evening approached, dark clouds gathered above the city.
Rain began falling.
At first, it was only a few drops.
Soon the streets were soaked.
People hurried home beneath umbrellas.
The old dog continued walking through the rain alone.
His already dirty fur became heavy with water.
Cold wind made his thin body shiver.
Just then, something bright rolled across the wet road.
A red balloon.
It bounced gently in the wind.
Tied to its string was a small birthday hat.
Someone must have dropped it after a party.
The balloon danced through puddles, carried farther and farther by the wind.
The old dog watched it drift away.
Then, for the first time all day, he began to run.
His old legs hurt.
His breathing became heavy.
But he kept chasing the balloon as if it were the most precious thing in the world.
Finally, the string caught on a low fence.
The dog carefully picked it up in his mouth.
The red balloon floated above his head as he slowly walked through the rainy streets.
People glanced at the unusual sight.
An old black dog…
Carrying a birthday balloon all by himself.
No one knew why.
No one stopped to ask.
Step by step, he returned to the narrow alley where he lived.
There, beside a cracked brick wall, lay a worn piece of cardboard that had been his bed for years.
He gently placed the balloon beside it.
Then he nudged the little birthday hat onto his head.

It slipped over one ear.
The balloon swayed softly above him in the evening breeze.
For the first time that day, the alley looked almost festive.
Not because it was beautiful.
But because, somehow, it finally felt like a birthday.
The old dog curled himself into a small ball on the cardboard.
The rain continued falling beyond the alley.
The red balloon floated quietly beside him.
There was no birthday cake.
No candles.
No presents.
No family.
Only an old dog…
A forgotten birthday hat…
And a red balloon that the wind had delivered like a tiny gift from the sky.
Before closing his tired eyes, the old dog’s tail moved ever so slightly.
Perhaps he wasn’t celebrating alone after all.
Perhaps, somewhere above the rain clouds, the stars remembered the birthday that the world had forgotten.
And for one quiet night, that little red balloon made an old, nameless dog feel as though someone, somewhere, had wished him a happy birthday.
