The little brown puppy was no more than a few months old.
His fluffy fur made him look like a tiny teddy bear, though it was dusty from sleeping on the streets.
Nobody knew his name.
Nobody knew where he had come from.
And nobody knew that today was his birthday.
It was the first birthday of his life.
While children celebrated with balloons and candles, the tiny puppy wandered through the city with an empty stomach.
He searched beside restaurants.
He sniffed around market stalls.
He peeked into trash bins, hoping to find a few scraps of food.
But everywhere he went, there was nothing.
As the afternoon grew colder, he reached a pile of garbage behind a bakery.
His little nose twitched.
Among the torn paper boxes and plastic bags was something colorful.
A birthday cake.
It had been thrown away after someone’s celebration.
The white cream was covered with dirt.
Leaves and bits of paper clung to the frosting.
One side of the cake had been crushed.
To most people, it was garbage.
To the hungry little puppy, it looked like the most beautiful cake in the world.
His eyes sparkled.
His tiny tail wagged excitedly.
He hurried toward it.
Carefully, he lifted one small paw and brushed away the dirt stuck to the top of the cake.
Then he used the other paw to wipe away a few more leaves.
Piece by piece…
He tried to make the cake clean again.
As if he wanted it to be perfect.
As if he knew it was a birthday cake.
Finally, he lowered his tiny head and took a small bite.
Then another.
And another.
His little tail wagged nonstop.
For the first time in many days, his stomach wasn’t empty.
The puppy didn’t know that the cake had once belonged to someone else.
In his innocent heart, it felt as though the world had remembered his birthday after all.
When he had eaten all he could, he licked the last bit of cream from his nose.
Then he quietly walked away.
Snowflakes had begun falling from the gray sky.
The wind became colder with every step.
The little puppy’s paws left tiny prints in the fresh snow as he made his way toward the old bridge where he usually slept.

Beneath the bridge, there was no blanket.
No bed.
Only a cold patch of concrete that shielded him from the wind.
The little brown puppy curled himself into the smallest ball he could.
His fluffy tail covered his nose.
His body trembled from the freezing air.
Outside, snow continued to fall silently through the night.
Cars passed overhead.
People hurried home to warm houses and loving families.
No one knew a tiny puppy was spending his birthday alone beneath the bridge.
Before closing his eyes, he looked up at the falling snow.
His little tail gave one gentle wag.
Perhaps it was because his stomach was finally full.
Or perhaps, in his innocent heart, he believed that discarded birthday cake had been a gift meant just for him.
He slowly drifted to sleep as snowflakes danced beyond the bridge.
The world had forgotten his birthday.
But even on the coldest night of the year, the little puppy still dreamed that one day, someone would find him…
Call him by a name…
Wrap him in a warm blanket…
And never let him spend another birthday alone.
