Fiona’s family had been searching for her for hours, terrified and hoping someone would find their missing dog before it was too late.

Then came the call no pet owner ever wants to imagine.

A dog had fallen into a deep well inside an abandoned home in Fairfield, California.

When officers compared the report with Fiona’s missing description, everything matched. It was the same dog, and the location was not far from where her family had been searching.

When Officer Bradley arrived, he could hear her cries.

But he could not see her from outside the house.

With urgent concerns for Fiona’s safety, deputies helped gain access to the abandoned property. Once inside, they found the heartbreaking scene: Fiona was trapped several feet below ground in a cistern, struggling to stay above the water.

She had been alone in the dark.

Cold.

Scared.

Exhausted.

And still fighting.

Vallejo Fire was called to help with the rescue, and by then Fiona’s owners had arrived and confirmed it was their beloved dog. The rescue was difficult because the space was tight and dangerous, but firefighters used specialized equipment and training to reach her.

Fiona did everything she could to help them save her.

Even after treading water for what rescuers believe was at least two hours, she still fought with every bit of strength she had left. At one point, she bravely grabbed onto a rescue loop with her teeth and tried to push herself upward from the dark well.

She was tired, but she was not giving up.

Finally, rescuers pulled Fiona to safety.

She had abrasions, she was cold, and her body was completely exhausted. But she was alive.

Most importantly, she was back in the arms of the people who had been desperately searching for her.

Fiona was taken for medical care and is now home recovering well. Her family is overwhelmed with gratitude for everyone who helped bring her back.

This rescue was a true miracle — made possible by fast action, skilled first responders, and one incredibly brave dog who refused to stop fighting.

For two terrifying hours, Fiona kept herself alive in the dark water.

And because help came in time, she finally made it home.
