They found the dog inside a trash bin behind an old row of buildings, just as evening was starting to fall.
He was lying motionless among dirty plastic bags, his body battered, his breathing so faint that anyone looking at him would have thought he had little chance of surviving. Fur that may once have been beautiful was now covered in dirt and blood. His eyes were closed, and his body looked almost completely drained of strength.
They named him Rex.
No one knew exactly how long Rex had been beaten. But the bruises, the wounds across his body, and the depth of his exhaustion made one thing clear — this was not pain from a single moment. He may have been abused again and again. He may have tried to run. He may have cried out at first, and then slowly learned to suffer in silence.
The most heartbreaking part was that Rex was not only beaten.
After he was hurt so badly that he could no longer stand, he was thrown into the trash like something worthless.
Not placed somewhere safe.
Not taken for treatment.
Simply discarded.
When rescuers bent down and lifted Rex out of the trash, his body was limp. He no longer had the strength to struggle, and he barely had the energy left to be afraid. He only let out the faintest breath, as if he were clinging to the very last thread of life.

Rex was rushed for emergency care. On the exam table, he lay still with tubes and oxygen support, his body worn down by too much pain. The medical team did everything they could to hold onto him, because if help had come even a little later, Rex might not have had any chance at all.
No one knows how long he lay alone in that trash bin. No one knows whether, in those final weak moments before he was found, he still hoped that someone might come for him.

Rex still has a long road ahead if he is going to recover. His body needs medicine. His wounds need time. And the heart that was so deeply betrayed may take longer than anything else to heal.
But as long as he is still breathing, there is still hope.
