Deep inside the cold forest, a small dog wandered alone, with no owner, no home, and no one to call his name.
Every day began with hunger.
While the ground was still covered in morning mist, he had to crawl out of the hollow tree where he had spent the night and lower his nose to the dead leaves, searching for anything he could eat. A dry piece of bread left behind. A few wild berries fallen on the ground. A scrap of food covered in mud.
Some days, he found something to swallow.
Some days, he searched until nightfall and still went to sleep starving.
But in the deep forest, hunger was not the most frightening thing.
The most frightening thing was that he had to live like prey.
At the slightest sound in the bushes, he froze. His ears stood up. His thin body went stiff. He never knew whether behind those leaves was only the wind, a snake, or another animal watching him.
One afternoon, he found a few scraps of food near the roots of a large tree. He had just lowered his head to eat when the bushes behind him suddenly shook violently.
A larger stray dog lunged out.
It growled, bared its teeth, and stared at the little bit of food on the ground.
The small dog immediately stepped back.
He did not want to fight.
He only wanted to eat.
But the larger dog kept moving forward, forcing him farther away from the only food he had found that day. Then it growled and attacked, biting into his shoulder. The small dog cried out in pain and fell onto the wet leaves.
Hunger, fear, and the instinct to survive forced him back onto his feet.
He had nowhere to run.
If he ran away, he would lose his only meal of the day. If he stayed, he could be badly hurt. But his starving body could not bear to give up.
The larger dog lunged again.

The small dog dodged to the side and bit back in desperation. Their bodies rolled through mud and dead leaves, growls and painful cries echoing through the empty forest. He was weaker and smaller, but he used every bit of strength left in his body to defend himself.
One snap brushed past his ear and left him dizzy.
Blood seeped into his dirty fur.
But he still did not give up.
He clawed at the ground, escaped from beneath the larger dog, and ran into the bushes. The scraps of food were left behind. He stumbled through the trees, thorns cutting into his paws, while the sound of growling followed behind him.
Only when the forest became quiet again did he finally dare to stop.
The little dog crawled into a hollow beneath a fallen tree. He curled up there, panting, trembling from pain and exhaustion. The wound on his shoulder throbbed. His stomach was still empty.
He had survived.
But he had lost his meal.
That was his life in the deep forest.
No day was truly safe.
By day, he had to search for food. By night, he had to hide from strange sounds in the dark. Every drop of water, every scrap of food, every dry place to sleep had to be earned through fear, wounds, and constant watchfulness.
He was not allowed to sleep deeply.
He was not allowed to be weak.
He was not allowed to make a mistake.
Because in that forest, one slow step could mean he would never see the next sunrise.
The most heartbreaking part is that this little dog was never meant to live like something that had to fight every day.
He should have had a home.
A clean bowl.
A gentle voice calling his name.
But instead, he had to learn how to bite back to stay alive, how to run when hunted, and how to swallow his hunger just to survive one more day.

As night fell, light rain began to fall through the leaves.
Inside the dark hollow, the little dog curled into himself, his eyes still half open. He was too tired to keep moving, but he was still too afraid to sleep. His ears continued listening to every sound in the darkness.
He had survived today.
But tomorrow, another battle would begin.
A battle to find food.
A battle to avoid danger.
A battle simply to stay alive.
