That night, heavy rain poured over a quiet street on the edge of town. Cold wind swept through the empty road, carrying the sound of water rushing along the curb.
Behind a closed store, in a dark corner, an old cardboard box trembled slightly.
When rescuers received a call from a passerby, they thought there might be a small abandoned animal inside. But when their flashlight shone into the soaked box, everyone froze.
Inside was a skinny white dog, her dirty fur covered in mud. Her body was shaking from the cold, but she had curled herself tightly around a tiny kitten, using her own body to keep the little one warm.
The kitten was drenched, weak, and barely able to open its eyes.
But the white dog, even though she could hardly stand, still tried to shield the kitten whenever someone came closer.
She was afraid they would take her little friend away.
One rescuer slowly knelt down and whispered with a trembling voice,
“It’s okay… we’re here to save both of you.”
But the dog refused to leave the box. She rested her chin gently on the kitten’s back and looked up at the rescuers with tired, pleading eyes, as if begging them not to leave her friend behind.
In the end, the rescue team lifted them together in the same warm blanket. On the way to the animal clinic, the white dog kept her body pressed close to the kitten. Even though she was hungry, freezing, and exhausted, she only calmed down when she could feel the kitten beside her.
At the clinic, the vet discovered that both of them were severely weak. The white dog had scratches on her legs, as if she had been wandering for days, searching for a place to hide. The kitten was so small that without the dog’s warmth, he might not have survived that stormy night.
During the first days of treatment, they refused to be separated.
Whenever a nurse carried the kitten away for a checkup, the white dog immediately lifted her head, her eyes filled with panic. And whenever the dog was being treated, the kitten would lie close to her cage, softly meowing as if trying to comfort her.
The rescuers named the white dog Snow, and the tiny kitten Milo.
Little by little, Snow began to recover. Her white fur was cleaned, and the fear in her eyes slowly faded. Milo started eating better too. He learned to stretch, to play, and to rub his little head against Snow whenever he wanted to sleep.
Then, a kind family came to adopt them.
At first, they planned to adopt only Snow. But when they saw Milo clinging to her, and Snow standing protectively in front of the little kitten, they understood one thing clearly:
These two souls could not be separated.
The day they arrived at their new home, Snow stepped carefully into the living room. Milo followed right behind her, his tiny tail raised with curiosity.
Just a few weeks later, that quiet living room was filled with joy.
Snow would lie on the soft carpet while Milo jumped onto her back, played with her tail, and hid behind the sofa. Sometimes, Milo would suddenly leap out and tap Snow’s nose with his tiny paws. Snow would tilt her head, then gently chase him around the room as if they were playing the happiest game in the world.
They were no longer two abandoned animals shivering inside a wet cardboard box.
Snow had become a gentle big sister, always giving Milo the warmest patch of sunlight near the window.
And Milo had become her playful little best friend, always finding a way to make Snow happy whenever she lay quietly by herself.
Every night, when the lights went out, Snow would curl up beside the sofa. Milo would climb into her arms and fall asleep against her chest, just like he had on the first rainy night they were found.
Only this time, they were no longer shaking from fear.
They had a home.
And more importantly, they still had each other.
