Bun and Min came into the world of that family at almost the same time.
They were both puppies when they arrived at the small house in a quiet American suburb. They played together in the yard, slept side by side, and greeted every morning with the same innocent excitement.
But as the years passed, their lives began to look nothing alike.
Bun, a beautiful Golden Retriever with soft golden fur, quickly became the family’s favorite. He slept on the couch, wore colorful bows around his neck, and enjoyed long walks in the park. Every day, he received delicious meals, fresh water, toys, and endless affection.
Min, a smaller black dog, was given a very different life.
While Bun rested comfortably inside the house, Min spent his days chained behind the backyard near the trash cans. His fur became tangled and dirty. His water bowl was often empty. Some days, there was barely any food at all.
Yet Min never complained.
Every morning, he watched through the fence as Bun enjoyed a large breakfast prepared by their owner. Fresh meat, treats, and clean water filled Bun’s bowl.
Meanwhile, Min stared at his own empty dish.
His stomach growled with hunger.
But he simply wagged his tail.
Perhaps he believed his turn would come someday.
Perhaps he thought if he waited patiently enough, someone would finally love him too.
That day never arrived.
When Bun was taken to the park, Min remained tied outside.
When Bun was bathed and brushed, Min sat covered in dirt and fleas.
When Bun slept on a soft bed, Min curled up on cold concrete beneath the rain.
As seasons changed, Min’s condition grew worse.
Summer brought unbearable heat.
Winter brought freezing nights.
Heavy storms soaked his thin body while Bun slept safely indoors.
The neglect slowly destroyed him.
Patches of fur fell out due to untreated skin infections.
His ribs became visible beneath his black coat.
One eye became swollen and red from infection.
The old chain around his neck rubbed against his skin day and night, leaving painful wounds that never healed.
Yet the most heartbreaking part was not the hunger.
It was not the sickness.
It was not even the loneliness.
It was the fact that Min still loved the man who ignored him.
Whenever the owner stepped into the backyard, Min’s tail immediately began wagging.
No matter how hungry he was.
No matter how much pain he felt.
He still hoped for a kind word.
A gentle touch.
A sign that he mattered.
One afternoon, hunger pushed Min to take a risk.
He noticed leftovers in Bun’s food bowl.
Slowly, he approached.
He only wanted a few bites.
Before he could reach it, the owner stormed outside.
The bowl was kicked across the yard.
Food scattered into the dirt.
Then Min was shoved so hard that he crashed onto the concrete.
The little dog yelped in pain.
But even then, he didn’t grow angry.
He simply lowered his head and retreated to his corner.
Months passed.
Min became little more than skin and bones.
One day, driven by desperation, he tried digging beneath the fence in search of food.
He never made it far.
The owner caught him.
Furious, he yanked the chain so violently that Min slammed onto the ground and was dragged back across the yard.
The wounds on his neck reopened.
His body trembled from pain.
But when the man finally let go…
Min still wagged his tail.
As if he couldn’t understand why he wasn’t loved.
As if he still believed that someday things might change.
That image would later haunt everyone who heard his story.
One rainy afternoon, a neighbor noticed something disturbing.
Min was lying near a puddle, slowly licking rainwater from the ground because there was nothing else to drink.
His body was covered in sores.
His fur was falling out.
His eyes looked empty.
The woman immediately called animal rescue services.
When rescuers arrived, they were shocked by what they found.
The chain was finally removed from Min’s neck.
Everyone expected him to run.
To escape.
To never look back.
But he didn’t.
Instead, Min stood silently and looked toward the house.
Then he looked through the window.
Inside stood Bun.
Warm.
Safe.
Loved.
For a few heartbreaking seconds, Min simply stared.
Perhaps he wasn’t mourning his owner.
Perhaps he wasn’t mourning the yard.
Perhaps he was mourning the family he had always wanted but never truly had.
At the rescue center, Min’s recovery began.
His skin was treated.
His eye infection healed.
He finally received enough food.
But the emotional scars were harder to erase.
For weeks, Min hid pieces of food beneath his blanket.
Rescuers soon realized why.
He was afraid someone would take it away.
Just as it always had been.
Slowly, through patience and kindness, Min began to trust again.
His coat grew back shiny and healthy.
His body became stronger.
And the sadness in his eyes slowly faded.
Months later, Min was running across a grassy field with volunteers who loved him.
For the first time in his life, nobody shouted at him.
Nobody pushed him away.
Nobody treated him like he was unwanted.
And as he raced across the grass with his tail wagging wildly, one truth became impossible to ignore:
The cruelest thing wasn’t that Min was neglected.
The cruelest thing was that every single day, he watched another dog receive all the love he had spent his entire life hoping for.
And still…
He never stopped believing that he deserved love too.
