Every morning, before the sun had fully risen, an old brown dog would quietly appear at the entrance of the city hospital.
He never barked.
He never begged for food.
He simply sat beside the automatic doors, staring at everyone who walked in or out.
The security guards named him Rusty.
Nobody knew where he came from.
His coat was dirty and matted.
One ear was torn.
His ribs showed through his thin body, and one front paw shook whenever he stood for too long.
Yet every time the hospital doors opened…
His tail wagged.
For just a second.
Then stopped.
Because it wasn’t the person he was waiting for.
The nurses began leaving bowls of food nearby.
Rusty never touched them immediately.
He always kept watching the entrance first.
Only after the doors stayed closed for a long time would he quietly eat a few bites.
Then he returned to the exact same spot.
Every day.
Rain or sunshine.
Morning or midnight.
Weeks passed.
People began asking about the lonely dog.
One elderly janitor finally recognized him.
“I’ve seen him before,” he whispered.
“He came here in an ambulance.”
Everyone fell silent.
Months earlier, an elderly homeless man had collapsed on the sidewalk.
Rusty had refused to leave his side.
He barked until strangers called for help.
When the ambulance arrived, Rusty chased it through the streets until the hospital gates closed behind it.
Since then…
He had never left.
Forty-seven days.
Forty-seven mornings.
Forty-seven nights.
Rusty kept waiting outside the same hospital door.
Every ambulance made him stand.
Every elderly patient made his tail move.
Every familiar scent filled him with hope.
Then disappointment.
Again.
And again.
One stormy evening, heavy rain flooded the streets.
Hospital staff begged Rusty to come inside.
He refused.
He curled himself against the cold wall beside the entrance, shivering beneath the pouring rain.
Because if his owner came out…
He didn’t want him to be alone.
The next morning, Rusty could barely stand.
His body trembled from hunger and exhaustion.
Yet when the hospital doors slid open…
He struggled to his feet anyway.
His tail wagged once.

Then slowly fell.
It wasn’t him.
Again.
Later that afternoon…
An elderly woman arrived carrying a small plastic bag.
Inside was an old blue blanket.
She walked slowly toward Rusty.
The moment she unfolded it…
The dog’s ears lifted.
He sniffed the blanket carefully.
Then froze.
It carried the scent he had been searching for.
The scent of the man he loved.
The woman knelt beside him, tears filling her eyes.
“I knew my brother would worry about you,” she whispered.
Rusty looked behind her.
Searching.
Waiting.
Still believing.
The woman gently held the blanket closer.
Rusty’s tired eyes never left the hospital doors.
