Today was Mochi’s birthday.
His family prepared a cute little cake for him, placed one small candle in the middle, and sang happy birthday together. Mochi sat in front of the table with a tiny party hat on his head, his round eyes fixed on the glowing candle.
He looked very serious.
As if he understood that this was the most important moment of the day.
Everyone smiled and said:
“Blow out the candle, Mochi!”
Mochi tilted his head.
Looked at the candle.
Then slowly leaned his little nose closer.
Instead of blowing, he… sniffed it.
He sniffed very carefully, as if trying to figure out whether that tiny light was edible, whether it was part of the cake, or why everyone was so excited about it.
The candle flame flickered slightly.
The whole family burst out laughing.
Mochi still had no idea what was going on. He just opened his eyes wider, looked at everyone, then looked back at the cake with the most innocent expression, as if asking:
“Did I do it right?”
Everyone encouraged him again.
“Try one more time!”
So Mochi leaned down again.
Sniffed again.
Took another tiny breath.
And made the candle wiggle just a little.
Finally, after a few adorable attempts with his little nose, the candle went out. Everyone clapped and cheered, while Mochi jumped back in surprise, then wagged his tail proudly as if he had just completed a very important mission.
Maybe Mochi did not understand what blowing out a candle meant.
Maybe he did not know what a birthday wish was.
Maybe he had no idea why everyone was so happy.
But he knew one thing.
Today, he was loved.
He was called by name.
He was looked at with gentle eyes.
And everyone smiled because of his sweet, silly little way of trying.
For Mochi, a birthday did not need to be fancy. All he needed was his family nearby, laughter around him, a soft hand on his head, and people patient enough to let him “blow out” his candle by sniffing it again and again.
Happy birthday, sweet Mochi.
May your new age be filled with warm hugs, delicious meals, happy playtime, and endless love.
And may every year, you still get to sit in front of a little birthday cake, stare at the candle with those round curious eyes, and try to blow it out in the most adorable way only you can.
