Pumpkin’s life could have been defined by what happened to her.
The little West Highland White Terrier had a painful past, and signs suggested she had suffered abuse before finding safety. The damage left her paralyzed in her back legs, forcing her to face the world with a body that could no longer move the way it should.
But Pumpkin never acted like her story was over.
When Tammie Fox adopted her, she quickly realized this tiny dog had a spirit far bigger than her body. Pumpkin did not want pity. She wanted life. She wanted movement, play, adventure, and joy.
With a wheelchair to support her back legs, Pumpkin began showing everyone what determination looked like. She raced across beaches, dug in the sand, explored the world, and played with the kind of happiness that made people forget she was supposed to be “limited.”
Her wheels did not make her less of a dog.
They gave her freedom.
But Pumpkin’s journey was not only about learning to move again. She also needed care to keep her body strong. Through hydrotherapy, she worked her muscles, built strength, and kept pushing forward. Each session became more than treatment. It became proof that her body might be damaged, but her will to live was untouched.
Tammie saw how much Pumpkin’s story could mean to other dogs like her. So she created Pumpkin and Friends, a nonprofit dedicated to helping disabled dogs get the support they need. Through the organization, she helped raise more than $30,000 to provide wheelchairs and assistance for dogs who might otherwise be left behind.
Pumpkin’s pain became a purpose.
Because of her, other dogs learned to walk, run, play, and feel free again in their own way.
Her impact did not stop there. Pumpkin even stepped onto the stage as Toto in a production of The Wizard of Oz, charming the cast and showing the audience that a dog with a disability could still shine. She was not chosen because people felt sorry for her. She was chosen because she had courage, presence, and a heart that could light up a room.
That is what makes Pumpkin’s story so powerful.
She was hurt, but not defeated.
She was paralyzed, but not powerless.
She was given wheels, but what truly carried her forward was love.
Pumpkin reminds people that disability is not the end of joy. Sometimes, it is the beginning of a new way to live. With Tammie beside her, she turned pain into movement, fear into courage, and one small life into a source of hope for countless others.
Pumpkin may move differently from other dogs.
But she runs toward life with more courage than most.
