Too Cold to Survive Alone
The cold in St. Louis that week was unbearable.
Snow covered the sidewalks while freezing wind whipped through empty streets like ice cutting through skin.
People rushed indoors as temperatures dropped to dangerous levels.
But beneath a parked car on a quiet street, a tiny black puppy was fighting silently to stay alive.
Curled tightly against the frozen pavement, the frightened little dog trembled nonstop as snow slowly gathered around him.
He was completely alone.
No food.
No warmth.
No one searching for him.
Hiding Beneath the Car for Safety
The puppy had likely crawled under the vehicle hoping it would protect him from the brutal wind.
But even there, the cold reached him.
His small black fur was damp from melting snow, and every loud sound nearby made him press himself farther against the underside of the car in fear.
Whenever footsteps passed, the puppy stayed completely silent.

Back at the shelter, rescuers fed him warm food and gave him a safe bed where he quickly curled into the blankets and fell asleep from exhaustion.

Nobody knows exactly how the little black puppy ended up alone on the streets during one of the coldest weeks of the year.
But rescuers know one thing for certain:
