Atlas was a 4-year-old Labrador and a rescue dog with the fire department. For nearly four years, he had worked alongside firefighters, responding to emergencies, searching through rubble, and helping bring hope to people waiting for their loved ones.
But after the powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake, Atlas faced the hardest mission of his life.

The cause of death was later determined to be a severe heart attack and acute respiratory failure. High temperatures, dehydration, and extreme exhaustion during the rescue mission had taken too much from the heroic dog’s heart.
The news of Atlas’s death left the entire rescue team devastated.

But no one was able to save his.
The fire department held a solemn funeral for Atlas. Firefighters and rescue workers stood in silence around him. Other working dogs were also there, as if saying goodbye to a teammate who had completed his final mission. There was no more barking to signal life beneath the rubble.
