The small gray puppy had fluffy fur that should have made him look adorable, but life on the streets had taken away much of his charm. One of his eyes was badly swollen from an untreated injury, and his once-soft coat was dirty and tangled from sleeping outdoors. Yet despite everything he had endured, he still approached people with hope in his heart.
That afternoon, the delicious smell of food drifted from a small street-side food stall. The hungry puppy slowly walked toward it, his tail wagging weakly. He wasn’t trying to steal anything. He wasn’t looking for trouble. He simply hoped someone might drop a small piece of food.
But before he could get close, the shop owner noticed him.
“Get out of here!” the man shouted.
Grabbing a broom, he rushed toward the tiny dog.
The puppy froze in fear.
His injured eye widened as the broom swung through the air. He quickly backed away, but the angry man kept chasing him, shouting louder and louder. Terrified, the little gray dog turned and ran as fast as he could.
He didn’t understand what he had done wrong.
He hadn’t taken any food.
He hadn’t hurt anyone.
Yet he was treated as though he didn’t deserve to exist.
The frightened puppy kept running until he could no longer hear the yelling behind him. Eventually, dark clouds rolled across the sky and cold rain began to fall.
Soaked and shivering, he found an old building with a small roof overhang. For a moment, he felt relieved. Finally, a dry place to rest.
He curled up quietly beneath the shelter, trying not to bother anyone.
A few minutes later, several people walked by.
Some glanced at him and frowned.
Others pointed at his dirty fur and swollen eye.
One woman waved her hand impatiently.
“Go away!”
Another person stomped toward him to scare him off.
The little dog immediately lowered his ears and shrank into himself.
Without making a sound, he stood up and left.
It was the only shelter he had found all day.
And now he had lost that too.
As evening arrived, the rain continued to fall. The city lights began to glow while the tiny dog wandered alone through unfamiliar streets.
His stomach was empty.
His body hurt.
His injured eye throbbed with pain.
Still, he kept walking.
He eventually found a narrow alleyway and slowly stepped inside. It was dark, quiet, and seemed safe enough to spend the night.
For the first time all day, he allowed himself to hope.
Maybe nobody would notice him here.
Maybe he could finally rest.
The puppy carefully lay down on the damp ground and closed his tired eye.
Then suddenly—
A door slammed open.
An angry homeowner stepped outside holding a stick.
“What are you doing here? Get out!”
The man charged toward him.
The terrified puppy jumped to his feet and tried to run.
But he was too exhausted.
His legs trembled beneath him.
After only a few steps, he stumbled and crashed onto the wet pavement.
Pain shot through his frail body.
For a moment, he couldn’t get back up.
The rain continued falling around him.
His soaked fur clung to his thin body.
His swollen eye slowly filled with tears.
The little dog wasn’t running anymore because he wanted to.
He was running because nobody would let him stay.
Every place he went brought the same result.
The same fear.
The same rejection.
The same loneliness.
Lying there on the cold ground, he looked up into the dark sky.
He didn’t bark.
He didn’t cry out.
He simply stared upward as if asking a question that no innocent animal should ever have to ask:
“Why does nobody want me?”
And perhaps the saddest part of all was that despite being chased away again and again, despite the hunger, the pain, and the loneliness, the little gray puppy still hadn’t stopped hoping that somewhere in the world, there was one person who would finally look at him and say:
“You can stay. You’re safe now.”
