A Goodbye Written in Three Pages

Jake was not left at Fire Station 8 in Fort Worth without a story.

Beside him was a three-page handwritten letter from his owner, Tom, a 65-year-old disabled veteran who said he had been living with Jake in a homeless camp for 20 months.

Tom explained that his former apartment would not renew his lease because Jake was a pit bull. With nowhere stable to go, and with his own life falling apart, he made the decision that broke him most.

He left Jake at the fire station after seeing a sign that read “Safe Place.”

“Jake Is Nothing but Love”

In the letter, Tom did not describe Jake as a problem. He described him as his baby.

He wrote that Jake had been raised to love everyone, and his plea was simple and devastating:

“Please help my baby.”

Tom admitted he had survived many hard chapters in life, but giving up Jake was the hardest decision he had ever made.

For Jake, that moment meant losing the person he loved most. For Tom, it meant walking away from his best friend because he believed it was the only way to keep him safe.

Firefighters Gave Jake a Home

The firefighters at Fire Station 8 did not hesitate for long.

They took Jake in, and he quickly made himself part of the station. He had a bed, toys in the backyard, and even claimed a recliner as his own.

Captain Dusty Sides said Jake brings love to everyone at the station. He does not choose one favorite person. Instead, he moves from firefighter to firefighter, giving each of them attention like he knows he belongs there.

A Dog Who Lost One Home but Found Many Hearts

Jake’s story is painful because it was not caused by a lack of love.

Tom loved him deeply. He simply could not give Jake the stable home he deserved while trying to rebuild his own life.

Now Jake is safe with the firefighters, surrounded by people who care for him. But the hope remains that one day, Tom may find housing, regain stability, and perhaps reunite with the dog he never stopped loving.

Until then, Jake is no longer alone.

He is the fire station’s dog now — loved, protected, and still carrying the story of the veteran who left him with one final plea:

“Please help my baby.”
