A Puppy With Only Days Left
A volunteer trip to Ghana became an unexpected rescue mission when Julia met a gravely ill puppy fighting for her life.
The puppy, later named Apricot, was brought into the volunteer compound by a young boy after being found in terrible condition. She was weak, wounded, and clearly suffering. Her body was covered in cuts, she had a severe worm infestation, and her breathing had started to sound wrong.
Julia could tell the puppy was running out of time.
Yet from the moment they met, Apricot clung to her. She kept jumping into Julia’s lap, as if she knew this stranger might be her only chance.
A Long Ride for One Fragile Life
With limited resources nearby, Julia made the long trip to a veterinary clinic to get Apricot help.
The journey was not easy, but the puppy needed urgent treatment. At the clinic, vets treated her for worms and gave her emergency medication. It was the first step in saving her life, but it was far from the end of the battle.
Because of strict travel rules, Apricot could not leave Ghana right away. She had to remain in quarantine until she was old enough, vaccinated, and medically cleared.
So the tiny puppy who had already suffered so much had to wait again.

Months of Waiting, Stress, and Uncertainty
Apricot stayed at the veterinary clinic’s shelter for months.
When Julia returned to bring her home, she found the puppy still fragile. The stress of confinement had taken a visible toll, and Apricot had lost hair on the top of her head.
She had survived, but she had not escaped the hardship yet.
The next challenge was getting her across countries, airports, and health checks safely.
The Journey Home Was Filled With Fear
Bringing Apricot home required multiple flights and careful planning.
Because of her size, she had to travel in cargo, which made Julia anxious throughout the journey. There was fear at every step: whether Apricot would make the transfer, whether she would arrive safely, and whether her little body could handle more stress after everything she had endured.
At last, Apricot arrived in the United States with Julia.
But even then, she needed more medical checks, treatment for a tick-borne illness, and several more days of quarantine before she could finally go home to New Jersey.
The Sick Puppy Began to Look Like a Miracle
Once Apricot was safe with Julia’s family, her recovery began to move faster.
She gained strength, received continued care, and slowly transformed from a fragile puppy into a healthy, happy dog. As she grew, something unexpected appeared across her coat: beautiful spotted markings that made her look almost like a little fawn.
Viewers online later compared her to Bambi and called her a “magical Disney dog.”
It was hard to believe she was the same puppy once found sick, wounded, and barely holding on.

Her Fight Was Not Over Yet
Even after reaching safety, Apricot still had more medical challenges ahead.
She underwent multiple surgeries to correct luxating patellas, a condition where the kneecap slips out of place. The recovery took time, patience, and more care from the family who had already fought so hard to save her.
But Apricot kept going.
Apricot’s story is painful because of how close she came to being lost before anyone could save her. But it is also a reminder of what can happen when one person refuses to walk away.
She was once a dying puppy in a roadside gutter.
Now she is safe, loved, and living proof that even the most fragile life can change completely when someone chooses to fight for it.
