Molly Was Lost in the New Zealand Wilderness After Her Owner Fell From a Waterfall — Then Strangers Funded a Helicopter Rescue

Molly, a border collie, was lost in the wild New Zealand bush after her owner fell from a 55-meter, or 180-foot, waterfall on the South Island’s West Coast.

The woman was badly injured in the fall, suffering bruises and cuts before being airlifted to safety on March 24. But rescuers could not find Molly at the time, and the injured hiker had to be evacuated without her beloved dog.

For Molly, that meant being left alone in rugged, dangerous forest terrain with no food, no shelter, and no way to understand why her owner had disappeared.

Matt Newton, owner-operator of Precision Helicopters New Zealand, later contacted the woman in hospital and offered to search for Molly. He flew over the area several times, but at first there was no sign of the missing border collie.

Refusing to give up, Newton and his family launched a fundraiser to pay for more helicopter time and advanced search equipment. Strangers quickly stepped in, donating more than 11,000 New Zealand dollars to help find the dog.

With the extra support, Newton returned to the skies with thermal imaging equipment, a veterinary nurse, volunteer searchers, and a rescue dog named Bingo.

Within about an hour, the team spotted Molly.

She was found near the area where her owner had survived the fall. She was hungry, dirty, and worn down from a week alone in the wilderness, but she was alive.

The helicopter lowered close enough for a volunteer to get out with Bingo and help calm Molly. According to Newton, she seemed to understand that help had arrived. She did not run away. She allowed herself to be rescued.

Despite everything, Molly was in surprisingly good condition. Once she was flown back to safety, volunteers who had been waiting to join the search celebrated the news — and gave Molly the comfort she had been missing for days.

Hours later, Molly’s injured owner arrived for an emotional reunion.

After surviving a terrifying fall and then facing the heartbreak of leaving her dog behind, she finally had Molly back in her arms.

Molly’s rescue became more than a search mission. It was a story of loyalty, strangers’ kindness, and one pilot’s refusal to let a lost dog disappear into the New Zealand bush.

A hiker was saved from a waterfall.

A dog was saved from the wilderness.

And because strangers cared enough to help, they found their way back to each other.
