Edward, a 5-year-old Chihuahua mix in Florida, was taken in for what seemed like one urgent problem: a fractured leg.
But when veterinarians at the Humane Society of Tampa Bay examined him, they discovered something even more dangerous. During X-rays for his broken leg, the medical team found foreign objects inside both his stomach and colon.
The object in his colon was expected to pass on its own, but the one in his stomach was a serious threat. If it moved into his intestines, it could have become life-threatening. Edward needed emergency surgery.
The discovery quickly turned Edward’s case into an unusual story online, but behind the surprising twist was a dog facing real medical danger. Edward was not only dealing with a fractured leg and emergency stomach surgery; he was also anemic, which made treatment more complicated.
Because his blood levels were too low, veterinarians could not safely perform both abdominal surgery and a leg amputation at the same time. The shelter said Edward would not have survived both procedures together. For now, his team is waiting for his blood levels to improve before moving forward with the next operation.
Despite everything, Edward is showing encouraging signs. He is eating well, enjoying walks, and staying in good spirits while under close care.
