Six tiny puppies were left in a Walmart parking lot when they were barely old enough to survive without their mother.
They were only about one week old.
Instead of being warm, fed, and tucked safely beside their mom, the newborn puppies were crowded into a pink bag and abandoned behind the tire of a parked vehicle in McPherson, Kansas.
It was a heartbreaking place to leave lives so fragile.
A person walking by could have missed them.
The car could have moved.
The weather, hunger, or the long hours without care could have ended their lives before help ever arrived.
Thankfully, someone found them in time.
The McPherson Police Department and animal control officers from the McPherson Animal Shelter responded to the report and immediately began caring for the puppies. From that moment, the little ones were no longer alone.
But saving newborn puppies is not simple.
They need to be bottle-fed every few hours. They need warmth, comfort, cleaning, and constant monitoring. At this age, even one missed feeding can become dangerous.
Shelter staff, police officers, and even jail staff have stepped in to help feed and comfort them around the clock. Every three hours, someone is there to make sure the puppies get what they need to keep fighting.
The shelter has thanked everyone who has already donated supplies and offered support. Bottles, formula, and other puppy-care items are still needed as the team continues caring for the six babies day by day.
For now, the puppies are on stray hold under the law, which means they cannot yet be placed in foster homes or adopted. They also cannot be adopted until they are at least eight weeks old. When they are old enough and ready, the shelter will post them publicly for adoption.
Until then, their survival depends on the people caring for them.
Authorities are also searching for the person who abandoned them. Police are reviewing surveillance footage and asking the community for information. Possible charges may include animal abandonment and endangerment.
The story has touched many hearts because these puppies were so small, so helpless, and so close to danger.
They should have been with their mother.
