Today was Rusty’s birthday.
But no one came.
No little cake was placed in front of him. No gentle voice called his name. No hand reached down to scratch behind his ears and whisper, “Happy birthday, sweet boy.”
There was only the dusty ground, an old car beside him, and the quiet sadness of a dog who still seemed to be waiting for someone to remember.
Rusty sat there with his collar still around his neck — a small sign that he once belonged to somebody. Maybe he once had a home. Maybe he once ran happily toward the sound of a familiar car pulling in. Maybe there was a time when he believed every birthday, every day, would be spent with the people he loved.
But today, he sat alone.
Every sound made him lift his head. Every passing footstep made his eyes search. For a moment, he would look hopeful, as if the person he missed had finally come back.
Then the sound would fade.
And Rusty would lower his head again.
He did not understand why no one remembered him. He did not understand why the day passed like any other day — without warmth, without celebration, without anyone stopping long enough to see the sadness in his eyes.
But even on his forgotten birthday, Rusty kept waiting.
Maybe that is the most heartbreaking thing about dogs.
Even when they are left behind, they still hope.
Even when they are forgotten, they still love.
So today, let’s not let Rusty’s birthday pass in silence.
Please leave a birthday wish for this lonely boy.
Let him know that somewhere in the world, people see him.
People care.
And even if no one came for him today, his birthday was not forgotten by everyone.
